Experienced Local Counsel Services

Johnson Hobbs Squires LLP, has more than 90 years of collective experience practicing in Federal Courts throughout Texas, including the Western District of Texas. Our firm routinely serves firms as local counsel for patent and trademark cases in Texas and throughout the United States.

Knowledgeable And Skilled Litigators

Attorney Ryan Johnson has been practicing in Federal Court in the Western District for sixteen years and has, at times, had as much as half of his docket in Federal Courts in Texas and Oklahoma, where he is also licensed. Johnson provides value to his clients in intellectual property disputes by leveraging his experience as an engineer and as a trial lawyer who has successfully selected juries and obtained favorable verdicts in both state and federal court.

Aaron Wilkerson is a practicing patent attorney with experience both litigating and prosecuting patents. His patent litigation experience began over a decade ago while working at a nationally-recognized patent litigation firm, where he worked on patent litigation exclusively.

Our Deep Community Roots

JHS attorneys and their families are deeply imbedded in the Waco community, serving on numerous bank and non-profit boards, civic organizations and churches.  A list of these schools, non-profit organizations and churches can be provided upon request.

Because JHS also has a thriving transactional practice, including complex estate planning and non-profit work, the firm is also entrenched with business leaders throughout the community.  Our firm also enjoys a distinguished reputation due to the multi-media coverage of several high-profile personal injury and sexual harassment cases we represented which resulted in large settlements and positive verdicts.

In-Depth Trial Preparation With Focus Group Studies

JHS considers focus group studies an essential part of any jury trial practice, routinely conducting focus groups in McLennan County in preparation for discovery and trials.  Focus groups can serve as a valuable tool in preparing your patent case for trial and for the presentation of the case.

We Know The Western District

The United States District Court for the Western District of Texas has become a hotbed for patent litigation, with up to eight hundred (800) cases filed annually.  In 2020 alone, 792 patent cases were assigned to Judge Albright, more than any other judge in the country. Since his appointment to the bench in 2018, Judge Alan Albright, a former patent litigator, has issued numerous Standing Orders and proposed scheduling orders regarding Patent and Trademark cases governing discovery, venue and pre-trial proceedings in patent and trademark cases.

The Western District has also proven to be home to a thoughtful jury pool for patent and trademark cases. In March 2021, a Waco jury awarded $2.175 billion to a California-based company in its dispute with tech giant Intel, marking what is believed to be the second largest jury verdict in a patent case in the country.   On the contrary, in October 2021, a Waco jury issued a defense verdict in favor of Google related to Google’s Nest Hub device.
