The color of your car can keep you safer

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2022 | Personal Injury |

If you’re looking for ways to stay safer when you drive, you’re probably considering the features of your vehicle. For instance, many modern cars have lane departure warnings, backup cameras and adaptive speed control settings – three systems that can help to reduce accidents and make your drive go more smoothly.

It is wise to consider these things, especially because technology is always getting better and new cars have more safety systems than old ones ever have. If you consistently have to share the road with large commercial trucks and other dangerous vehicles, these systems lower the odds of an accident.

However, it’s not just technology that keeps you safe. Something as simple as the color of your car can play a role.

Which color is best for a car?

What studies have found is that white cars tend to get in the lowest number of accidents. This is attributed to the fact that they are slightly more visible and they stand out against the pavement. They’re 12% less likely to crash.

Conversely, cars that are black or dark gray are a bit harder to see. This may not feel like an extravagant difference to someone who owns one of these vehicles, but it shows up in the accident statistics that they tend to crash at a slightly higher rate.

What can you do after a wreck?

Of course, no matter what color your car is, if another driver made a mistake and hit you, then they are responsible. A negligent truck driver cannot blame the color of your vehicle if they failed to yield the right of way or merged into your lane, for instance. You need to know if you can seek financial compensation for your medical bills and other costs.
