Long-Term Care Benefits for Veterans and Surviving Spouses

4039f89d3b.jpgLong-term care costs can add up quickly. For veterans and the surviving spouses of veterans, help may be available. The Veterans Administration (VA) has an underused pension benefit called Aid and Attendance that provides money to those who need assistance performing everyday tasks.

Aid and Attendance is available to veterans with 90 days of active duty, at least one of which was during a wartime period. The veteran does not have to have service-related disabilities to qualify. Veterans or surviving spouses are eligible if they require the aid of another person to perform everyday actions such as bathing, feeding, dressing, or going to the bathroom.

In addition, there are medical expense and asset requirements which must be satisfied. However, under current rules, it's possible in most cases for a veteran or surviving spouse to meet these requirements with the assistance of professional advice.
