Apple's New Phone Feature Will Block Notifications for Drivers

Driver distraction is a serious problem in Texas and nationwide. In fact, each year more than 100,000 crashes in Texas involve driver distraction, and Texas was recently ranked in the top 20 states with the most distracted drivers.

While the responsibility of stopping distracted driving ultimately falls to drivers, phone makers have begun to do their part to improve safety on the roads.

Apple's new operating system will silence notifications when the phone detects that a driver is behind the wheel.

Texting while driving is known to be the most dangerous kind of distracted driving because texting causes manual, visual and cognitive distraction. Now, with the release of Apple's new iOS 11 this fall, phones will be able to detect when a user is in a car or driving, and all notifications will be muted and the phone's screen will be darkened.

The feature will silence calls, as well as notifications of texts, social media, email and gaming apps. Users can also record custom voice messages to say they are currently driving.

While the new feature is a step in the right direction, the driver mode can also be bypassed.

Phone users have to opt in to the "Do Not Disturb While Driving" feature, and the app can be turned off once it is started.

The "Do Not Disturb While Driving" feature comes after Apple was sued for failing to implement a driver mode in phones, even though the phone maker had the technology to do so.

Victims of distracted driving accidents deserve full and fair compensation.
